The primary functions of the mouth are grasping and grinding feed and mixing feed with saliva. The structures in the
mouth responsible for grinding food are the teeth. The incisor teeth are used for cutting or shearing food. The
premolars and molars of animals are responsible for grinding feed. After an animal is born, it develops a set of milk
or baby teeth. Permanent, or deciduous, teeth replace the milk teeth but at different ages depending on the animal
species.
