5. HR policies and practice
The following sections provide a flavour of the range of policies and practices that are
in place across the international hotel chains reviewed in this study. The search focussed
on identifying whether the basic elements associated with good practice in HR
management exists within international hotel chains.
5.1. Defining good practice in HR management
Human Resource Management is about the development of policies, processes and
management approaches designed to develop human potential and harness it to meet
organizational goals. There are many ways to describe the culture, policies and processes
that need to be in place and actively implemented to achieve best practice in human
