Complying with the ETI Base Code – key audit checkpoints
The points below are an indication of what an auditor will look for to demonstrate
compliance, in order to help sites prepare for audits. More comprehensive guidance is
available on the Tesco Ethical Trading Guidance website, accessible through Technical Library.
1) Employment is Freely Chosen
a) Copies (not originals) of workers’ passport or identification are held by the employer
b) Overtime is voluntary and toilet/rest breaks are not restricted
c) There are no debts or high charges owed to the employer (e.g. for transport/accommodation
2) Freedom of Association & Collective Bargaining
a) If there are worker representatives, they are freely elected by the whole workforce
b) If there are trade union members, they are not discriminated against in any form
c) Trade union officials are granted access to the site at agreed times
3) Working conditions are safe & hygienic
a) A senior manager is responsible for managing health & safety
b) All workers are trained on the health and safety risks in their work and how to prevent accidents
c) Suitable Personal Protective Equipment is provided to all workers free of charge
d) Accidents are recorded
e) There are clean and adequate toilet facilities, drinking water, changing rooms, lockers, and eating areas
f) Temporary or contracted workers have the same access to facilities as permanent workers
4) No child labour
a) Age is checked and verified (identity documents) for all workers during recruitment
b) Young workers (under 18) are not exposed to hazardous work, long hours or night work
5) A living wage is paid
a) Any deductions from pay are signed for by each worker and there is no deduction for equipment
b) Workers are paid for training time
c) Workers are paid a premium for overtime
d) A clear and understandable pay slip is provided to each worker
e) Pay queries are resolved quickly
6) Working hours are not excessive
a) Working hours are recorded accurately and include all work time e.g. preparing equipment
b) Working hours do not exceed 48 hours a week on a regular basis, and do not exceed 60 hours a week
except in exceptional circumstances
c) Workers have at least one day off in 7
7) No discrimination
a) Jobs are openly advertised with clear criteria, and are offered on the basis of skills and experience
b) There are objective measures of performance for each task and managers keep records of individual
workers’ performance
8) Regular employment
a) All workers have a written contract of employment in line with national law
b) If sub-contractors are used to hire temporary labour, the employer checks that all of these standards
are met by the sub-contractor
9) No harsh or inhumane treatment
a) There is a mutually respectful relationship between workers, supervisors and managers
b) There is a confidential grievance mechanism for workers to raise concerns and the grievance and
resolution are fully documented.
