Recently, metabolites of LAB has been shown to have probiotic effects, which contain antibacterial substances such as lactic, acetic, propionic, butyric acids, ethanol, hydrogen peroxide and bacteriocins (Foo et al. 2005; Thanh et al. 2009). These substances were able to reduce the pH and the opportunistic pathogens. Loh et al. (2009) reported that feeding of spray-dried metabolites produced by Lactobacillus plantarum could reduce faecal pH and ENT population in rats. Moreover, Thanh et al. (2009) demon- strated the feeding of probiotic metabolites improved the growth performance, reduced faecal pH and increased faecal LAB population in broiler chickens. However, the information of probiotic metabolites effects on piglet growth performance, gut microflora and faecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) is still limited. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of liquid metabolite combinations produced by L. plantarum on growth perfor- mance, faeces characteristics, intestinal villi height and diarrhoea incidence in postweaning piglets.
