Typhoon Goni, located about 380 miles northeast of the Philippine capital, Manila, had maximum estimated sustained winds of 130 mph as of 5 a.m. U.S. EDT Thursday, making it equivalent to a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Some additional strengthening is forecast over the next 12 to 24 hours.
Meanwhile, Super Typhoon Atsani, which has been maintaining its strength, is churning hundreds of miles to the northeast. As of 5 a.m. EDT Thursday (5 p.m. Japan time Thursday), it was centered about 500 miles southeast of Iwo Jima with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph, equivalent to a high-end Category 4 hurricane. Atsani had been a Category 5 equivalent and it may briefly reach that status again on Thursday before the super typhoon eventually weakens this weekend.
