As it happened: Scotland votes No to independence from UK
Scots have rejected the chance to break away from the United Kingdom, with the No campaign winning the country's independence referendum.
More than 4 million voters were faced with the question: "Should Scotland be an independent country?"
More than 50 per cent of them voted No, with the result becoming official just after 6:00am local time when Fife's voters declared for the Union.
Conceding defeat, first minister Alex Salmond called on independence supporters to "accept the democratic verdict of the people of Scotland".
There was a record turnout, with more than 80 per cent of eligible voters casting their ballots across the nation.
