Alternative foods are commonly used to attempt to provide therequired amount of dietary iron; these foods, such as bran cereals,dark green leaves, seeds, and skins of fruits, enrich the usual diet ofa given population and improve the quality of the diet by providinga concentration of minerals and vitamins. In Brazil, these concen-trations are known as “multimixtures” and are used, among otherreasons, to improve the levels of iron in children [3].
