Chapter 1 Center priority visual system
Our visual system is not uniform in the structure as well as in the function. In the retina almost every function is good and the wide region in the brain is used for the central part of the retina. The emphasis is given to this center priority visual system and the necessity of eye movement is pointed out.
Chapter 2 Eye movement
Because of the center priority retina it is necessary to move eyes to see outside. The movement traces are shown in reading sentences and looking at pictures. By analyzing the traces we can know that the eye movement is composed of the fixation and the saccade. We may ask whether the peripheral retina is not necessary in pattern recognition as the eyes move all the time to scan the outside scene. Then experiments to show some area of the retina is needed to do the pattern recognition are introduced. It is also pointed out that the widening the functional visual field size is the important action of a baby for the pattern recognition.
Chapter 3 Spatial property
The lateral inhibition is explained and the edge enhancement mechanism are explained.
Chapter 4 Adaptation
The adaptation is the important property of human visual system. The visual acuity adapts to the illumination level, The dark adaptation and the adaptation to temporal change are introduced. Then color constancy and the size constancy are explained.
Chapter 5 Apparent motion
The apparent motion is demonstrated and the principle of movie projector is explained.
Chapter 6 How we see color
Trichromacy is introduced and the some tools to use the property are introduced such as TV, mobile, projector, and top are introduced. Other color appearance phenomena are introduced such as the simultaneous color contrast and the color fusion.
