Across the total sample, 10.9% of those who lived alone were in the frail subgroup compared with 4.9% of those in couple households (Figure 4). Older people who were frail, then, according to our criteria, were more likely to be living alone. This is likely to mirror both the older age and higher rates of widowhood, especially among older women who live alone. The lower prevalence of frailty among couple households may also mirror a likelihood that the more resilient or less frail partner was the person interviewed
