Symptoms of depression and anxiety: An eight-item
version (SCL-8) of the Hopkins Symptom Checklist-25
was used to measure symptoms of depression and anxiety
at gestation week 30 and again at 6 and 18 months postpartum.
Short-form versions of SCL have previously been
shown to correlate highly with the total score of the original
scale and to have good psychometric properties (Strand,
Dalgard, Tambs, & Rognerud, 2003; Tambs & Moum,
1993). Items in the SCL are scored on a Likert scale ranging
from 1 (not at all bothered) to 4 (very much bothered)
and, in the present study, Cronbach’s alphas for SCL-8
were 0.81, 0.83, and 0.83 for the three assessments
(week 30 and at 6 and 18 months postpartum), respectively.
The SCL-8 incorporates two subscales, four items each,
allowing separate analysis of depression and anxiety scores
(SCL-4Dep and SCL-4Anx), with Cronbach’s a’s of 0.72,
0.78, 0.81 and 0.73, 0.77, 0.78, respectively..
