25th November - There are a few very bizarre festivals out there and this is certainly on the list! If you have never seen over 2,000 urban Macaque monkeys feasting on cakes, fruit and sweets in a buffet laid out for them all, here is your chance.
Held in Lopburi, in the north of Thailand, the festival was set up to promote tourism in Thailand and this event draws thousands of people every year. This time around the plan is to have 4,000 kilograms of food on offer for the monkeys.
The monkeys are thought to be sacred, they actually eat the food in front of the Pra Prang Sam Yot temple in Lopburi, and the buffet is the town's way of thanking them for bringing tourists to the town. The idea behind the event was thought up by business man Yongyuth Kitwattananusont in 1989 and the popular festival has been running ever since.
If you are going please do post your photos on the Thailand destination page! Do you have any other unusual festivals you want to tell us about at WAYN? If you do we'd love to hear about them.
