Create your own "greenwater," the primary food source in aquatic environments. Microalgae on our disks will remain alive for 8 months or longer. Disks
should remain sealed in bag and stored in a dark or dimly lit, cool, air-conditioned area. Do not expose to high levels of light or heat. The species on our
standard disk (Nannochloropsis=Japanese chorella) can be cultured in either fresh or salt water. Remove seal and place a layer of sterile water over the
entire disk surface. Sterile water can be obtained by microwaving 1 L of water for 7 minutes and allowing it to cool to room temperature. Replace cover
and allow to stand for 24 hours under moderate lighting. Then lightly rub off the cells with a sterile cotton swab and pour mixture into 1 L of sterile water.
Do not add nutrient gelatin portion, just the algae cells. Provide good aeration for another 12 to 24 hours and then add directly to the aquarium. If you wish
a continuous culture of "greenwater," treat disk as above but add to 2 L of sterile water, provide good aeration and 16 hours or more of good lighting and
add the appropriate amount of "Microalgae Grow" (F2A6). A sterile 2-liter plastic soda bottle is an excellent vessel. Highest densities are acheived in 6 to 9
days. A continuous culture can be established by using a portion of this culture to inoculate another bottle of sterile water that has been fertilized. For more
detailed information, obtain our Plankton Culture Manual (WQB32).
