The results of this study contrast with those of other
studies of penaeids where strong population structure was
indicated, sometimes over short geographical distances
(reviewed in Benzie 2000). Allozyme and mtDNA analysis
of F. notialis revealed population structure among several
samples taken around Cuba and fixed differences
in mtDNA haplotypes between two locations (García-
Machado et al. 2001), while random amplified polymorphic
DNA (RAPD) analysis of Penaeus stylirostris indicated
genetic differentiation of shrimp within the Gulf of California
(Aubert & Lightner 2000).
