The Story:
The film opens with a flashback of a meeting between Gandalf (Ian McKellan) and Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) at the Prancing Pony before the events of An Unexpected Journey. The seeds of the quest are put in place and Thorin is convinced he must reclaim the dwarf kingdom by finding the Arkenstone which is currently being guarded by the powerful and deadly dragon Smaug (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch).
Flash-forward to a year later and Thorin's trusty pack of dwarves are working their way through dangerous lands, accompanied by Bilbo the hobbit (Martin Freeman) and Gandalf. Their destination: The Lonely Mountain. Gigantic spiders who dwell in an enchanted forest are the least of their worries on the journey as they're hunted down by orcs and taken captive by the wood elves, led by Thranduil (Lee Pace). The odds are stacked against the motley crew of dwarves and a hobbit, but they find unexpected allies among the elves and it's with their assistance that their trek to the The Lonely Mountain is able to continue. Once they arrive at The Lonely Mountain, they'll need to use all of their combined strength and wits to discover the hiding place of the Arkenstone without being killed by the slumbering dragon.
