The intent of this credit is to reduce the indoor air contaminant emission from adhesive and sealant materials in interior construction. All adhesives, sealants, sealant primers, and aerosol adhesives must conform to the volatile organic compound (VOC) limits, which are identified in related standards. To meet this requirement, low-VOC materials have to be specified and clearly stated in specification. Moreover, the product cut sheets, material safety data (MSD), and certified document with authorized signature should be requested in the construction document as the verification papers.
Credit 4.2: Low – Emitting Materials – Paints and Coatings (1 point)
This credit has the same objective as the previous one, but it mainly focuses on different type of materials that is paints and coatings. Such materials must have the VOC content level less than the value listed in related standard. Therefore, the VOC content level should be tracked during the construction process. Moreover, low-VOC paintings and coatings have to be specified and clearly stated in specification and construction documents.
Credit 4.3: Low – Emitting Materials – Flooring Systems (1 point)
This credit has the same objective credit 4.1 and 4.2, but it mainly focuses on materials used in flooring system. All materials need to be tested and qualified as the requirements listed in related standard. Standard criteria often relate to emission factor and VOC content levels of each material. Therefore, the product requirements (such as required testing and certified documents) should be clearly stated in specification or contract documents. If possible, the products should be selected from the ones that get the Green Label Plus certified program or are tested by trustable agency.
Credit 4.4: Low – Emitting Materials – Composite Wood and Agrifiber Products (1 point)
This credit also has intent to reduce the indoor air contaminant emission from interior construction by focusing on composite wood and agrifiber products. Such materials used must not have urea-formaldehyde resins as the component. Therefore, the product cut sheets, material safety data (MSD), and certified document with authorized signature should be requested in the construction document as the verification papers. Also, these documents should be review carefully.
