Patients who are concerned
about having a lack of capacity
in the future, for example those
diagnosed with dementia, and who
fear inappropriate decisions being
made on their behalf can arrange
for a legally binding ‘advance
decision’ to be drawn up, which
will be recognised by the Mental
Capacity Act (2005).
These advanced decisions allow
patients to refuse treatment if they
are no longer able to communicate
this refusal (Dignity in Dying,
2012). If patients have an advanced
decision requiring that they not be
repositioned at the end of life, for
