The temple which has remained till our time has been put by the metropolitan Geronty in 1484. Concerning date of construction of the temple predecessor of a consensus at historians isn't present. To the middle of the XV century there was here an estate of the Russian metropolitans who since the 14th century lived in Moscow. In 1448 the Ryazan bishop Jonah subsequently canonized by Russian Orthodox Church as one of her outstanding figures has been elected to the Russian metropolitan throne. Appointment of the metropolitan a cathedral of the Russian bishops, but not the Constantinople patriarch, meant a gap with centuries-old tradition and was an important step on the way to formation of independent Russian church.
