A comparison of the metal concentrations for the investigated elements in mussels and sediments at the Montenegrin costal area for five different locations and two seasons showed differences
clearly associated with anthropogenic impact, geographical location and time (albeit less), with the exception of the Ni and Cu levels. The concentrations of the metals in mussel soft tissue were shown to correlate with metal levels in the sediments, with the exception of Zn. In general, the data for the metal concentrations found in the mussels and sediments sampled from the Montenegrin coast are within the range of the mean values reported in the literature. The results of this study supply valuable information concerning the metal content in mussels along the Montenegrin coastal area. Moreover, these results can be used to estimate the quality of mussels and to evaluate possible risks associated with their consumption.
