Airports
Aviation is a vital sector of the UAE economy contributing more than Dh145 billion (US$39.47 billion) or 14.7 per cent to national GDP. Aviation and logistics also have a major impact on tourism, hospitality, trade and finance, promoting and strengthening economic diversifiction.
A key fact underpinning this success is the UAE's strategic location, which has made it a truly global hub for air travel, a one-stop connection facilitating flights to a vast range of destinations across the globe. In addition, the expanse, reach and appeal of the country's five national airlines, including the multi-award-winning Emirates Airline and Etihad Airways, renowned for the quality of their fleet, the diversity of their network and the safety and high standard of their service, has ensured that passenger numbers continue to increase at the UAE's seven airports. Consequently, as indigenous airlines remain game-changers in a challenged global aviation industry, there has been a corresponding expansion in airport development.
Dubai International Airport (home to Emirates Airline) was the third busiest airport in the world in 2012, having welcomed 57.7 million passengers and achieved 13.2 per cent annual growth in passenger traffic. Its rise to third place was meteoric, since as recently as 2010 it was only only ranked tenth with 28 million passengers. By the end of March 2013 Dubai International had already moved into second place and now has Heathrow's title as the world's busiest international airport within its sights. Passenger traffic at Dubai International is expected to exceed 65 million in 2013 and the airport's Dh28billion (US$7.6 billion) expansion programme could boost capacity to 90 million passengers per year by 2018.
To date, the opening of Concourse A in the first week of 2013, the world's first purpose-built A380 facility, has helped to maintain strong growth at the airport, whilst Emirates continues to add to its fleet and route network. Recent new additions bring its fleet to 119 Boeing 777s and 30 A380s, ensuring that Emirates is the largest operator of both the A380 and Boeing 777 in the world. However, because of soaring fuel bills, Emirates posted a 72 per cent drop in net profit in its 2011–2012 financial year ending 31 March. Nevertheless, the airline recorded revenues of Dh62.3 billion (US$17 billion) in 2011–2012. However, its profits more than doubled in the first half of this year on continued passenger growth and a slight fall in fuel costs. Emirates expects to carry 37 million passengers in its 2012–2013 financial year, and it expects revenue to grow by 18 to 20 per cent.
Flydubai, the national low-cost carrier that also operates out of Dubai, posted its first annual projit in 2012, its third year of operation. The airline reported revenue of Dh2.7 billion (US$735 million) and a profit of Dh151.9 million (US$414 million) having carried 5.1 million passengers throughout its rapidly expanding network.
Cargo has been a significant feature of airport development. Freight volumes rebounded at Dubai International towards the end of 2012, ensuring that total volumes for 2012 rose 3.9 per cent to 2.28 million tonnes, from 2.19 million tonnes in 2011. In December 2012, cargo volumes climbed 6.5 per cent from 189,593 tonnes in December 2011 to 201,949 tonnes in December 2012.
Dubai's air passenger throughput will receive another major boost when the new passenger terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport, the centrepiece of the Dubai World Central project, opens towards the end of 2013. Cargo operations commenced in 2010 and business jet aviation operations are scheduled to take place in 2013. This is part of the long-term migration strategy to shift general aviation from Dubai International to Al Maktoum International.
Designed to be the world's largest airport, the first phase of Al Maktoum will feature one A380-enabled runway, 64 remote stands, one cargo terminal with annual capacity for 250,000 tonnes of cargo and a passenger terminal building designed to accommodate 5 million passengers per year. Eventually, the five-runway, four-terminal airport will be able to handle 160 million passengers a year, up from the previously projected 120 million, as well as 12 million tonnes of cargo.
Abu Dhabi International Airport welcomed 17.7 million passengers in 2012, reflecting a significant growth of 18.9 per cent in passenger traffic compared to 2011. Gateway cargo traffic also increased, at 567,965 tonnes, up by 17.9 per cent in comparison to 2011. Expansion works currently under way in Terminal 1 will increase capacty to 20 million passengers in the very near future. However delivery of the iconic Midfield Terminal Complex (MTC) in 2017, for which a Dh10.8 billion contract was awarded in June 2012, will further increase capacity to approximately 40 million. Located between the airport's two runways (hence the name), the spectacular new terminal will house passenger and cargo facilities, duty-free shops and restaurants. The central area of the 700,000 square metre terminal will feature a 52-metre-high ceiling and an 8,400 square metre indoor park. Construction will commence in the third quarter of 2013.
As in Dubai, the annual double-digit growth that Abu Dhabi Airport has been recording in the past decade is directly impacted by the aggressive expansion plans of the national carrier, Etihad Airways. Etihad reported a net profit of Dh154.14 million (US$42 million) in 2012, up 200 per cent on Dh51.38 million (US$14 million) in 2011. This is the second year that Etihad has made a profit. Revenue was up 17 per cent to Dh17.6 billion (US$4.8 billion) on passenger numbers that had increased by 23 per cent year-on-year to 10.3 million. These figures were boosted significantly by Etihad Airway's strategic equity partnerships and codeshares, whcih delivered more than US$600 million in total revenue.
Fuel costs are always an issue in these challenging times, but the airline hedged 80 per cent of fuel costs during the year, the same level as in 2011. It also used biofuels on a delivery flight in January 2013, the first in the Gulf, as part of its commitment to environmental sustainability.
Six aircraft were added to Etihad's fleet, bringing it up to 70, enabling access to 86 Etihad passenger and cargo destinations and 248 codeshare destinations. Planned fleet upgrades for 2013 include nine wide-bodied aircraft (six Boeing 777-300ER passenger, two Boeing 777 freighter, one Airbus 330 freighter) and five narrow-body aircraft (four Airbus 320, one Airbus 321).
Abu Dhabi airport also made history in 2012 when, for the first time in the UAE, domestic flight operations were inaugurated from Abu Dhabi to Fujairah by private carrier Rotana Jet . RAK Airways, which was relaunched in 2010, also operates scheduled domestic flights from Ra's al-Khaimah to Abu Dhabi.
Sharjah International Airport's double-digit growth in passenger numbers in 2012 was primarily as a result of aggressive expansion by Air Arabia, the region's first budget airline. The airport handled more than 7.5 million passengers in 2012 compared to 6.6 million in 2011, reflecting a 13.6 per cent year-on-year growth. Airicraft movements also increased by 3.5 per cent to 65,975 during January to December 2012. Freight handled in 2012 reached 419,116 tonnes.
In 2012, Air Arabia carried over 5.3 million passengers on its flights to 82 destinations, a 13 per cent increase over 2011. In the same year, it made a net profit of Dh425 million (US$115.80 million), an increase of 55 per cent on 2011. The airline's turnover for 2012 amounted to Dh2.9 billion (US$10.64 billion), an increase of 21 per cent year-on-year. Air Arabia took delivery of six new A320 aircraft from Airbus in 2012 as part of an order for 44 aircraft placed in 2007, and is expected to take delivery of another six planes in 2013.
Ra's al-Khaimah International Airport recorded a 24 per cent growth in passenger numbers in 2012 and over 60 per cent growth in financial performance over 2011. Aircraft movements, duty-free sales and cargo tonnage also showed positive growth. The fledgling airline RAK Airways is also instrumental in promoting growth at this airport.
