The Sanskrit word “saṅkhya” means “reflection. This means reflection as a means to knowledge.
“Yoga” similarly means contemplative meditation (samādhi). In ancient times, the word was also said to mean “bring together,” but most traditional commentators followed the idea that it means meditation.
Both Sāṅkhya and Yoga schools, taken together, are approaches for understanding the ultimate meaning of existence, and thereby for attaining mokṣa.
