Description:
The cross-barred venus, Chione cancellata, is a common bivalve inhabitant of the Indian River Lagoon. It reaches a size of approximately 1-1.75 inches. Valves are ovate to nearly triangular shape and have raised concentric ribs with coarse radial ribs that together form a series of rectangles over the entire surface of the shell. Color is typically a white - gray, often with brownish rays on the exterior of the shell. The shell interior is glossy white, sometimes with blue or purple markings.
