MOLECULAR MODE OF ACTION
Propentofylline (HWA 285) is a 1,3,7+ubstituted xanthine derivative (22,43). The
complex molecular mechanisms of action of propentofylline have been partially elucidated.
Present knowledge of the molecular mechanism of action of propentofylline is
schematically summarized in Fig. 1. Propentofylline blocks adenosine transport, acts
as an inhibitor of CAMP- and cGMP-phosphodiesterases (PDEs), and is a weak adenosine
