Gunmen abduct 6 Vietnam sailors and shoot another
Bangkok Post12 Nov 2016+12 more
MANILA: Gunmen abducted six Vietnamese sailors and shot another yesterday just hours after Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia announced a meeting to discuss the piracy threat in Southeast Asia.
Defence ministers from the three countries are slated to meet on Nov 22 in Vientiane, Laos, to flesh out a proposal by Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte for the three countries to allow cross-border hot pursuit of suspected criminals.
“This is a new development that we hope will send a signal that we are very committed to do anything to curb and end such kidnappings of Malaysians,” said Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak after talks with Mr Duterte in Putrajaya, the federal administrative capital.
“This is a new development that we hope will send a signal that we are very committed to do anything to curb and end such kidnappings of Malaysians,” said Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak after talks with Mr Duterte in Putrajaya, the federal administrative capital.
Mr Duterte arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday for a two-day visit, his first since taking office in June. The two leaders signed an agreement to establish this “framework for cooperation” to tackle the kidnappingfor-ransom issue.
Describing the new plan, Mr Najib cited an example where Malaysian navy vessels pursuing kidnappers or militants would be allowed to continue their hot pursuit into Philippine waters so long as they notify the Philippines navy beforehand. The latest incident occurred when when a bulk carrier was intercepted in Philippine waters off a southern island stronghold of the militant Abu Sayyaf group, the coast guard said.

The cargo ship was bound for Davao City in another part of the province of Mindanao, but was intercepted when passing through a strait off Basilan island by 10 armed men who came aboard and took hostages.
“One of the crew was shot and was evacuated to a local hospital,” said Commander Jerome Cayabyab of the coast guard. He said the fate of the captives were uncertain after they were transferred to smaller, faster boats. It was the second kidnapping incident in the south in a week. The Abu Sayyaf, a militant group that swears allegiance to Islamic State, said on Monday it had kidnapped a German national. A woman found dead on an abandoned yacht was believed to be his partner.
