Efficacy of AAC00-1ΔhrcC as a seed treatment under
growth-chamber conditions. Watermelon seed naturally infested
with A. citrulli displayed a mean BFB seedling transmission percentage
of 55% (±8% [standard error]) (Fig. 5A). In comparison,
seed treated with AAC00-1ΔhrcC displayed a BFB seedling transmission
percentage of 10 (±3)% by 12 dap, which was lower than
that observed for AAA 99-2 (14 [±4]%; Fig. 5A). Tukey-Kramer’s
HSD analysis indicated that BFB seedling transmission percentages
for seed treated with AAA 99-2 and AAC00-1ΔhrcC were
significantly lower than for seed treated with PBS (P < 0.01).
However, BFB seedling transmission for seed treated with AAC00-
1ΔhrcC and AAA 99-2 were not significantly different (P = 0.8;
Fig. 5B). Seed treatment with AAC00-1ΔhrcC delayed BFB symp-tom expression by 2 days. When seed were treated with AAC00-
1ΔhrcC and AAA 99-2 BFB, seedling transmission was reduced by
81.8 and 74.6%, respectively, compared with PBS
