There are various stories about who created french fries.
France believes that they created fries. In 1802, fried potatoes were served at the White House in the United States. They were cooked in the "French manner." The potatoes were sliced and fried, just like today.
Belgium believes they created fries, before 1680. Poor Belgian people used to fry fish to eat. When they could not catch fish, they sliced potatoes into flat pieces. They cut the pieces to look like fish. Then they cooked the potatoes in oil.
Which story is true? No one really knows for sure.
