To evaluate if the Aegean region served as a centre of origin for
freshwater crab species, or if the extant species dispersed into the
Aegean region from surrounding areas, we applied a parametric
biogeographic method as implemented in Lagrange vers.
20091004 (Ree and Smith, 2008). Lagrange reconstructs the range
inheritance at a node with a likelihood approach, based on dispersal
and extinction rates that are estimated via a simulation process
(Ree et al., 2005). We assigned the clades to the following
areas: A = Africa; B = Balkan Peninsula, the Aegean islands and
the eastern tributaries flowing into the Aegean Sea; C = Anatolia,
tributaries to the Black Sea, South- and Southwest Turkey, Cyprus
and the Levant.
