In the past 15 years there has been an increase in
the survival rate of patients with burns.1
This increase
may be a result of improved life-support measures,
antimicrobial therapy, and improved surgical techniques.2
Among the health care professionals directly
involved in the medical and physical management of
the patient with burns are members of the physical
medicine and rehabilitation team, namely, the physical
therapist, the occupational therapist, and the
physiatrist.
