A large proportion of species in the Pittidae are
endemic to small areas, making them particularly vulnerable to
depletion when exploited. Like many other primarily terrestrial forest
birds, Pittas are particularly susceptible to disturbance during the
breeding season; for example, birdwatchers’ activities have given
•cause for concern in the limited range of f. gurnevi, an Appendix I
species (Oriental Bird Club, 1 989). Attempts to capture such shy
birds for trade may, therefore, be detrimental to nesting success in
the wild even for individuals not taken.
