Zhang (1983)investigated the effect of altitude on fruit quality of apple in the Chuan-Dian
area of Hengduan Mountain and found that, to a certain level, with the increase of altitude,
the cuticle became thicker, the layers of epidermal cells increased, and the area of red
color in apple skin became larger. Comparing the anatomical structure of skin of two apple
cultivars at low altitude of Ya’an and high altitude of Maoxian, our findings were similar to
those of Zhang (1983). ‘Starkrimson’ and ‘Golden Delicious’ apple in Maoxian had thicker
and well-distributed cuticle, longer and thinner epidermal cells, and longer and thinner
sub-epidermal cells with more layers, and also a higher percentage of red cells, but those
in Ya’an had thinner cuticle, shorter and thicker epidermal cells, and shorter and thicker
sub-epidermal cells with fewer layers and a lower percentage of red cells (Table 4). The
regression analysis further suggested that cuticular thickness, as well as cell length and
thickness of epidermis was associated with anthocyanin accumulation.
