Antibiotic resistant isolates were subjected to PCR for detection of antimicrobial resistance determinants and class 1 integrons. Total genomic DNA was extracted using the method of Ausubel et al.and PCR reactions were performed on a MJ Research PTC-200 Thermal Cycler. The class 1 integrons screening was performed with primers for the integrase gene intl1 and for the variable region of the class 1 integrons CS5′/CS3′ as previously described.The presence of SGI1 in S. Typhimurium DT104 strains was investigated by PCR with primers DR-S004 (SGI1 left junction, int, xis, rep), and S044-DR (SGI1 right junction with retronphage). Mapping of SGI1 was conducted
by PCR with a set of primers targeting genes trh, aadA2, floR, tetG,pseI, sul1; the link of the SGI1 backbone to the MDR region (S026-int)
was also checked (Carattoli et al., 2002).
