Hangzhou, located in eastern China, is one of the best developed
cities in China (Fig. 1). It covers an area of
3068 km2 and has a population of about 4.1 million. There
are one sanitary landfill and two incineration plants in the
city. Currently, about 60% of the MSW is disposed by
landfill and 40% by incineration. There is also an enterprise
in charge of the collection, disposal and integrated utilization
of hazardous waste. In 2005, a total of approximately
1.38 million tonnes of MSW was produced by the city, with
an average increase of 3.3% over the past 5 years. The average
daily amount generated per capita was 0.92 kg.
