The results of this study indicated that plasma triglyceride,
cholesterol and LDL-C levels were predominantly
lower in the chickens fed diets supplemented with 20 g/kg
crushed black seed, as well as probiotic- or synbiotic-fed
chickens, compared to those fed the control diet. The
addition of 10 g/kg black seed or 1 g/kg prebiotic supplement
to diet also resulted in a decrease of plasma
cholesterol concentration. Some of the microorganisms
present in the probiotic and synbiotic preparation may
also modify blood cholesterol by deconjugating bile acids
to produce free bile acids or directly binding dietary
cholesterol into the small intestine during fat digestion
before cholesterol can be absorbed into the blood (Ooi and
Liong, 2010)
