‘Hazing’ or ‘Welcoming’ tradition (Rub Nong in Thai) is a very popular and unique activity in Thai universities. It means the seniors, juniors and sophomores are welcoming the freshmen as their young sisters and brothers. This activity has been with Thai universities for a long time. Hazing activity happened in every Thai university at the start of the new semester and now I can say it’s a culture for university students and it was very beautiful ceremony of welcoming.
But nowadays, this activity is getting worse and uncontrollable. Sometimes they get permission but sometimes they arrange the activity without permission from university. Also, the seniors are welcoming the new comers in many unsafe ways. First, some university’s seniors force the freshmen to drink whiskey if the freshmen didn’t drink it; the seniors will not accept them to be their brothers and sisters and won’t let the freshmen pass the activity. Furthermore, the seniors try to force or train the freshmen as in a military. For example, the seniors will shout out to the freshmen of what they want the freshmen to do, if the freshmen couldn’t do it, the seniors would give freshmen a punishment. Moreover, the worst situations of this welcoming situation might be the stripped naked, beaten, sexually harassed and forced to crawl through the dirty water. Those activities are leading to sadism welcome more than the warm welcome.
All of those activities I mentioned above are totally bad. Seniors always say that it’s a warm welcome to the freshmen but they didn’t realize that what they did was the hell for all new comers. The true warm welcoming should be what they do to get good memories together and what make they get closer and love each other.
