demand condition, participants were shown three houses and one store. The starting and final goal
locations were located on opposite sides and were counterbalanced by participant. The toy store
(the subgoal location) and the remaining house were on opposites sides and were also counterbalanced
by participant. In the high demand condition, participants were shown four houses and two
stores. The two stores were on opposite sides and counterbalanced by participant. The starting and
final goal locations were also on opposite sides, with their individual locations counterbalanced with
the remaining two houses by participant. All participants started by placing a doll in front of the purple
house (starting location) and were given two goals in sequential order (a subgoal and a final goal).
Participants were asked to move the doll to the location that satisfied each goal.
Within each demand condition, half of the children were asked to make future choices for themselves
(self condition) and the remaining children were asked to make future choices for another individual
(other condition). In the self condition children were asked to pretend that the doll was
themselves, and children in the other condition were asked to pretend that the doll was another child
(‘‘Charlie’’ or ‘‘Jill’’).
