I couldn’t believe my ears when I heard Assemblyman Donart voice this crass and heartless statement at the Rotary’s reception for recent college graduates who are making their mark in the business world. Sure, we want to encourage the young and express our enthusiasm for their vigor and gumption in getting ahead in our highly competitive world. But we surely don’t want to do it at the expense of the older men and woman who pioneered before them in much the same spirit.
You were right to explode a balloon in Donart’s face and rock him back on his heels. He tends to be too big for his britches, and he hasn’t yet realized what a lemon that kind of outlook can be in his political future. More important, though, I commend you for advocating a plan whereby our community will play an active role in locating jobs for older residents who want to join, or stay in, the work force. You can count on our firm to participate in this program.
