Fig.3 Which do you think is more important: preserving the traditional character of my town, such as protecting historic buildings, farms or working waterfront even if it means fewer new jobs, or encouraging economic development that brings new jobs to my town, even it means a change in the character and types of businesses in my community?
communities, even if it meant fewer jobs, Washington County favored job creation over preservation.
The county-level differences or place effects reported above suggest that the distinct social and economic experiences in these two counties play a role in shaping perceptions about the use of resources. The survey provides a way to explore the relative importance of place and individual characteristics. We can also ask whether recent demographic changes help to explain the divergence in views between these counties. Table 1 defines our independent variables. Table 2 gives the dependent variables relating to perceptions of marine resource and marine environmental problems.
Table 3 examines how well different background, partisanship, and place-related indicators predict views about marine resource use. Weighted binomial logit regression was employed with dichotomous dependent variables such as jobs and weighted ordered logit used with ordinal variables such as fishing or aquaculture. We show only the significant effects that remained in the models after a simplification step that involved dropping, one at a time, predictors with effects not distinguishable from zero. Given the moderately large sample (n=1518),nonsignificant terms also tend to be quite small. Setting them aside clarifies the presentation and improves efficiency, without substantively changing the final results.
Among background factors, gender race, and working in fisheries had no siginficant effects in these models. Of particular interest was the lack of newcomer
