Leaf venation patterns — Study of the venation patterns of
leaves of eight extant species of Mangifera collected in the fi eld
(at least 30 leaves from 1 to 3 trees per species) did not show
differences related to size and shape of leaves or between sun
and shade leaves. Additionally, the marginal venation pattern
type (MVP, see Appendix 1) was strongly consistent for conspecifi
c leaves from the same or different trees (P. Sawangchote,
unpublished data). We therefore considered these
venation patterns to be potentially useful in distinguishing species
of isolated fossil leaves of this genus.
