When I visited Meesterlijk in Amsterdam in 2013 I met Foekje Fleur, a Rotterdam based designer who is known for her beautiful colored vases. I already saw some images of the yet to be opened Line Hotel and immediately spotted her vases inside the room. How cool is that? Dutch Design inside a Los Angeles hotel with a Korean touch? I asked her about the collaboration and yes, she made hundreds of vases and shipped them to the States. Every room has three of them and I really like it!
Okay back to Los Angeles. The Line Hotel is a project of the Sydell Group, the group who is also behind the Freehand in Miami and the NoMad Hotel in New York. Because The Line Hotel is based in Koreatown (also known as K-Town) they worked together with (Korean) entrepreneurs like Roy Choi, Poketo, the Houston Brothers and Sean Knibb to create an unique atmosphere. Every thing is thought through: from the interior of the rooms to the food in Pinterest-worthy restaurant The COMMISSARY.
When I arrived with a taxi from Downtown LA I’ve spotted The Line Hotel sign from far. Watch the logo you’ll be amazed by its simplicity. Love it! On the ground floor you’ll find the lobby, a bar, lounge area and the Poketo shop. This is their second shop and they have a fantastic collection. I wanted to buy everything, but ended up buying a new iPhone case from Native Union. They regularly organize events. In the weekend after my stay they hosted a Calligraphy Workshop. Cool!
On the first floor you’ll find their pool for hot Summer days and their restaurant The COMMISSARY. All the restaurants inside the hotel (Pot, The Bar and The COMMISSARY) are created by Roy Choi. He started selling his delicious Korean food on the streets of Los Angeles before being the hottest chef in town and opening one restaurant after the other. The menu is slightly different than in other restaurants. You see the food via a lovely illustration and most dishes are meant to be shared. A good introduction to the Korean kitchen -> although they also have a good club sandwich on the menu. The interior of The COMMISSARY is so stunning. It’s located in a glass house with a lot of plants and cool furniture. Even if you’re not staying at the hotel, you can have dinner here.
My Hollywood Hills King Room was located on the top floor of the hotel and, as the name, suggests, looks out over the Hollywood Hills. The view is more than amazing. Trust me: you won’t get enough of it. In the morning the sky turns pink, in the afternoon it was so clear I could see the Hollywood Sign. Because the rooms have floor to ceiling windows the view really stands out, but the room itself is striking too. I love the chair with the Aztec print (by Knibb Design), a copy of Roy Choi’s book and of course the vases by Foekje Fleur. Behind the bed there’s a large table so you can get some work done and the bathroom has a shower and Baxter of California bath products. I would highly recommend you to go for a room with the Hollywood Hills view for a real Los Angeles experience.
