The YLLSD was developed to measure selfassessed
scores of youth leadership skills gained
through participation in 4-H and/or FFA activities.
The Youth Leadership Life Skills Development
Scale (YLLSDS) is a 30-indicator, unidimensional
instrument (Seevers, Dormody & Clason, 1995).
For the purposes of this study, selected Iowa FFA
members indicated their perception of “gain”
acquired through their experiences in the Iowa FFA
Association. The YLLSDS used a four-point subscale
with scores from zero to three (0 = no gain, 1
= slight gain, 2 = moderate gain, 3 = a lot of gain)
and summated scores ranging from 0 to 90.
Cronbach’s alpha for the YLLSDS section in this
study was .97.
