Goal Ranking and Matching raises students’ awareness of their own learning goals, or their own lack of identifiable goals, in relation to a specific course. They begin to recognize their own investment in and responsibility for learning.
It allows faculty to determine whether and to what extent students’ learning goals overlap their teaching goals – information that is critical to gauging the students’ level of investment in and motivation for learning in that course.
This CAT gets students involved right from the start in a dialogue about the course’s direction and aims. It therefore encourages active involvement and communication.
Students get immediate feedback on the match between their goals and the instructor’s When students know what to expect, they can make more informed choices about staying in the class or dropping out and can more effectively focus their energies if they stay.
