1. Interviews with enterprises. From May to July 2006, we
investigated 19 towns and more than 60 industrial enterprises
in the district using questionnaires or informal discussions,
from which we collected land-use data and major economic
indices for these enterprises, mostly registered at the town
level or lower.
2. The land registry. From 2003 to 2005, the Shunyi Division of
the Beijing Municipal Bureau of State Land and Resources
had a land registry with nine townsWest of the Chaobai River
and Beixiaoying to the East. Using the names of enterprises,
we matched these enterprises’ land-use data with the major
economic index in the economic records. However, the land
registry records only contain the legal users, not the actual
users. Consequently, not all enterprises in the land registry
matched the economic index. As a result, we were able to
use about 30 enterprises with matching land-use data and
economic indices in this study.
