He had learned his superb blending of color and light in Paris as a student of Robert Henri from 1901 to 1906. Henri was a member of a group of painters known as the Ashcan school who aimed to depict realistically America’s burgeoning metropolitan life – its tenements, docks, sport arenas, factories, and streets.
