Eighteen multiparousHolsteincowswereusedtostudythelongtermeffectofreducing
dietaryPconcentrationonintakeofDMandmilkyield,onbloodlevelsofinorganic
phosphate(Pi), Ca,vitaminD3, parathyroidhormone(PTH)aswellasassessingbone
turnover bytheuseofboneformationmarkerosteocalcin(OC)andboneresorption
markercross-linkedcarboxy-terminaltelopeptideoftypeIcollagen(CTX).Treatments
were initiated3weeksbeforeexpectedcalving,andcowswerefolloweduntilweek36
aftercalving.IndryperiodtreatmentswereLowP(LP)(1.7gP/kgofDM),MediumP(MP)
(2.1gP/kgDM)andHighP(HP)(2.5gP/kgDM).Afterparturitionandthroughout
lactationtreatmentswereLP(2.3gP/kgDM),MP(2.8gP/kgDM)andHP(3.4gP/kgDM).
Differences indietaryPwereobtainedbyadding0.60and1.19%mono-sodiumphosphate
per kgDMtoMPandHP,respectively.Thecowswerefedrestrictivelypre-partumandfor
ad libitumintakefromoneweekbeforeexpectedcalvingandthroughouttheexperiment.
Due toahighnumberofhealthproblems,LPtreatmentwasterminatedaftersamplingin
week 12,andcowswereshiftedtoHPandcontinuedonthistreatmentuntilweek36.
ReductioninPconcentrationfrom3.4to2.3gP/kgDMreducedDMI,milkyield,milk
proteinyieldandplasmaPi concentration,andincreasedserumconcentrationofCTX,but
did notaffectserumconcentrationofOCinearlylactation.ReduceddietaryPconcentra-
tion from3.4to2.8gP/kgDMdidnotaffectDMIormilkproductioninearlylactation.Dry

PlasmaCaincreasedinLP,whereastherewasnoeffectonserumconcentrationofPTHor
on plasmaconcentrationofvitaminD3 pre-partum, inearlyorlatelactation.Despitean
estimatedmobilizationofPinearlylactation,onthebasisofresultsofCTXandOC,itis
not possibletoreducePconcentrationfrom3.4to2.3gP/kgDMindairycowsinthis
periodwithoutcompromisingDMIandmilkproduction.Theresultsindicateapotential
for reducingPconcentrationinearlyandlatelactationfromthecurrentrecommendations
