A liquid-liquid
extraction using bicarbonate buffer (pH 11.0) and butyl acetate from
Sigma-Aldrich (St. Louis, M.O.) were performed prior to GC/MS
analysis. In addition, femoral blood, collected 3 hours after death, was
sent to a reference laboratory for the analysis of sulfhemoglobin and
thiosulfate. Sulfhemoglobin was analyzed by spectrophotometry and
thiosulfate was analyzed by ion chromatography. Lung tissue was also
sent to the reference laboratory for a hydrocarbon and oxygenated
volatiles panel by gas chromatography (GC).
