Lesson VOC 50
Task: Use a vacuum.
Prerequisites: ADT 3, COG 11, SEN 12
Concept: This lesson is based on the assumption that the vacuum to be used is in good operational repair. Concepts such as changing the bag or clearing a clog are not a part of this sample lesson but could be added based on the student's abilities and the work site needs. Obviously, different vacuums have different controls. For this reason, the specific piece of equipment that is likely to be used by the student should be the one that is used as a teaching material. The use of attachments is also not taught at this time but could easily be added at the end of the lesson.
Behavioral Objective: When requested to "please vacuum the (name of a specific room)," the student will locate the vacuum, take it to the requested room, plug the vacuum in, turn it on, and vacuum the floor surface to a 90% accuracy level for 20 trials.
Materials: A vacuum and a room (preferably carpeted).
Task Analysis:
1. Review with the student where the vacuum is located and the location of the room to be used as a training area. Assist the student in carrying the vacuum to that location and continue this process until the student can perform that complete task with only a verbal request.
2. Continue Step 1 and add physically guiding the student through the process of plugging the vacuum in and turning it on.
3. Continue Step 2, adding the action of the back-and-forth motion of vacuuming by using gestural demonstration.
4. Continue Step 3, reducing the gestural prompting, and provide feedback until the student understands what constitutes a reasonable coverage of the floor surface area.
5. Reduce all prompting until only the total-task verbal prompt as described in the terminal objective is needed.
