The design consists of raceway ponds (1,000 m2 to 1,500 m2) with a sand banks and an asbestos divider running down the middle of the pond. Thick polyethylene liners prevent seepage. The supply of seawater, filtered by the coarse sand, comes from tube wells that are eight meters deep.
The design for the outlet is unique and ingenious. The effluent water passes through a buried 75-cm diameter culvert, located 15 cm below the pond bottom. The effluent flows into a treatment pond before being discharged into a river far from the inlet.
