Flexibility (interchangeable with mobility)
– The ability to move a single joint or series of joints smoothly
and easily through an unrestricted, pain-free range of motion.
Mobility
– The ability of structures or segments of the body to move or be moved in order to arrow the occurrence of range of motion for functional activities.
• Passive mobility is dependent on soft tissues extensibility
• Active mobility requires neuromuscular activation.
Flexibility
• Moving without restriction and pain
• 2 types;
– Dynamic flexibility is caused by active movement
• depending on contraction force of muscles and resistance from the connective tissues.
– Static flexibility is caused by passive movement
• depending on the extensibility of muscles and the connective tissues.
• Reduction of the flexibility caused by: – Limitation of movement
– Prolong immobilization
– Bony deformity
– Connective tissue or neuromuscular diseases
