What knowledge management theory lacks at present is a fundamental unit of human
cognition that can be reproduced (to some degree) in computers. Knowledge is not data and
therefore data structures are not knowledge structures. Knowledge is more than information.
While it is presently impossible to embody knowledge in computers, the use of the avatar as the
fundamental unit of knowledge structure may lead to the creation of computer applications that
support human cognition near the level of knowledge. At present, the tool that appears make
it possible to create knowledge processing applications based upon architectures of avatars is
Macromedia Director. What the table structure is to data in a relational database the avatar
may be to knowledge in a knowledge-processing computer application.
