Prince Sapphasit
One upon a time. Kirirat town was ruled by a king named King Usapharat. He had a daught called Princess Suwanasopha. She had a very beautiful figure which was the talk of the town. However, she had never talked to any man even her own father. When she was old enough to get married, King Usapharat sent envoys to invite kings and princes from various countries to come and ask for the hand of his daughter in marriage.
At that time there was another town named Alikanakon with King Vichairat as its ruler. He had only one son named Prince Sapphasit.PrinceSapphasit was handsome and highly talented. He studied arts and sciences in various fields that made him very knowledgeable. He had also learnt successfully the art of moving people’s minds and spirits into other objects. One day Prince Sapphasit also heard of Princess Suwanasopha’s story, so he wanted her to be his wife. He, together with his close courtier, travelled to Kirirat town.
When he arrived in, Prince Sapphasit sat cross – legged on the floor in front of the door of Suwanasopha’s bedroom and waited there till 9 p.m. Then’ he decided to move his courtier’s mind and spirit to a lamp and told the Princess a story.“Once upon a time, there were four merchants whowere frienfs. One night while they moored their boat at a quay and retired for a rest, the first merchant woke up in the middle of the night and saw a large sandalwood log floating in the wather. He took the log and carved it into a girl. He then recited an incantation to give it life.
Next morning, the second merchant woke up and saw a naked girl sitting there. So he brought clothers and ornaments for her to wear. When the third merchant saw her beauty that touched his heart’ hr invited her to sit on bed. The fourth merchant woke up and was the last one to see her. And he had a friendly conversation with her. Eventually, all four merchants fell in love with the girl and each wanted her to be his wife. After Prince Sapphasit had finished telling the story, he asked the lamp, “Who should be the girl’s husband?”The lamp answered immediately,“the first merchant who had carved the sandalwood log should be her husband.”
Princess Suwanasopha heard the answer. She did not like it and then said“It should be her father. The third merchant should be her brother, the fourth one should be nher mother, and the one who should be her husband is the second merchant.”When Princess Suwanasopha finished talking, the musical instruments started to strike up a time simultaneously for the fiest time.At midnight,Prince Sapphasit moved the mind and spirit from the lamp to her bed legs and continued with another story.“There were four princes who journeyed to Takasila town to study at Tisapamokschollof thought. After graduation, they travelled together to return to their town.
On the way back home, the first prince who was an expert in prophecies predicted that a Hasadeelingbtrd holding a girl in its mouthwould fly past us. He asked the second prince who was an expert in archery to be ready to shoot arrows.Soon aHasadeeling bird really flew oveeer them with a beautiful girl in its claws. Thereupon, the prince shot the bird accurately, frightening it to release the girl who then floated briskly in the air and fell into river. The third prince who was an eapert in swimming saw the saiuation and then jumped into the river to help her but the girl was dead already. The fourth pince recited magic incantattions to bring her back to life. When the girl came round, all four princes vied with one another for the girl. ”
Princess Sapphasit then ashed the mind and spirit at the bed legs. “Who should be the the girl’s husband ? ”The mind and spirit answered. “She should be the wife of the prince who shot the arrow at the bird, forcing it to drop her.”When the Princess finished talking, the musical inatruments started striking up a tune simultaneously for the second time.
At 3 a.m. Prince Sapphasitmoved his courtier’s mind and spirit to the bed cover sheet and then started telling another story.
“There were four lads. They loved four girls. One day, the lads asked for the addresses of the girl each one loved so that they could call on them there. ”
The first girl stroked her head. The second one stroked her chest. The third one stroked her cheek. The fourth one stroked her eyebrow. This was a mystery to unravel the meeting place, the four girls returned to their own homes. The four lads could not find out where their lovers lived. They didn’t have the courage to even ask anyone. Sothey just sat down taiking to one another. At the place where the four lads were talking, there was bandit publicly tied up nearby. He heard the whole story that the four lads were talking about ; thereupon, he said :
“I will solve the puzzles for you in exchange for wather. Is that OK?” the bandit said.
All four lads hurried to get some wather for the bandit. The bandit then solved the problems.
“The house of the girl who stroked her head has a banyan tree for relaxing. The house of the girl who stroked her cheek has a jackfruit tree in the weat. The house of the girl who stroked her cheek has a pottery kiln in the south. The house of the girl who stroked her eyebrow has a seaweed pond in the north.”The four lads went to look for the house of each one’s own lover. They found them exactly as told by the bandit. And they told their lovers how they wewr able to find their house. When the girl heard this, they chased the four lads to go away because they thought they were not clever at all. Then they took the bandit to live with them and looked after him as if he was their husband.
The first girl looked food for him to eat. The second girl brought water for him to drink. The third girl served warm water for him to take a bath. The fourth girltook care of cleanliness for him.Consequently the bandit recovered from his illness and was released after serving the sentence. The bandit was very grateful to the four girl for their kindness, but he wanted to have only one wife.”PrinceSapphasit then asked the mind and spirit, “Which girl should take the bandit as her husband?”The mind and spirit answered, “The girl who took care of the cleanliness should take the bandit as her husband.”
When princess Suwanasopha heard this, she objected again one more time.“That’s not right. The girl who brought food for him should take the bandit as her husband because it is the wife’s duty to prepare food. The other girl performed the duties of only a maid.”Whan the prinaess finished talking, the musical instruments started striking up a tune simultaneously for the third time.Meanwhile, it was almost the approach of dawn. Prince Supphasit admired Princess Suwanasopha’sintelligence, so he went into her bedroom and asked her to marry him.
After that both of them lived together happily forver.
