Hobart, the capital city of Tasmania, is located on the coast in the
state's south east. The population (approximately 215,000) is about
double that of Launceston, and the two cities are separated by about
160 km. Both cities have a similar climate, with cold winter temperatures,
and the prevalence of wood burner use is similar. However, the
topography and meteorology of the two regions is quite different and
Hobart has substantially better air quality that can be attributed largely
to better air circulation and dispersion of air pollutants
